You will be able to see Hadrian’s Wall, a Milecastle, and one of the best preserved sections of the Vallum, the defence ditch running parallel resting south of the wall. Cawfields also has some of the best views across the rugged moorland vistas of the Northumberland National Park.Your guide Venutius, is a local Celtic Cheiftain, of the Brigante tribe. He will discuss life before the Roman invasion, life during the 368 years of Roman rule and the purpose of the Wall.

  • Tours suitable for individuals or large coach groups
  • Location: Cawfields, Military Road, Haltwhistle, NE49 9NN
  • Clients must make their own way to Cawfields Car Park
  • Walk Distance: 1.5 miles
  • Leisurely: A walk for reasonably fit people with a little country walking experience.
    It will include unsurfaced rural paths.
  • Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended.
  • Toilets in the Car Park.
  • Car Park charge £4 facilities maintained by the National Park Authority.

  • There are also local pubs along Hadrian’s Wall and in nearby villages of Haltwhistle, Haydon Bridge & Greenhead (Plan Your Visit Page)

The tour includes a walk (1 mile or less) along one of the most iconic central sections of The Wall with easy access to Milecastle 42. Additionally, we will take you to ONE of the museums listed below.

We will also point out the best and most treasured artefacts.We will discuss what life was like here 2000 years ago for both the native Celtic population and the Roman soldiers and civilians who lived in the area.

We can spend the entire day hiking (up to 9 miles) along the iconic central section of Hadrian’s Wall.   Or if you would like to visit the museums and archaeological sites we will take you to TWO of the museums listed below.  Your guide will be able to explain a history of each site and what makes it so unique.  Enjoy a picnic lunch, taking in the stunning vistas across the Northumberland National Park, or a pub lunch in a local inn with charm and atmosphere.  We can happily mix a 3 mile hike in the morning with musuem visits in the afternoon.  The choice is yours….
