Crypts, Churches & Cathedrals: UNESCO World Heritage Site
Full Day Tour
(approx. 8 hours)
Far from being a tour of religious sites, this tour will also reveal spectacular architecture, craftsmanship, art, cultural development and the remote wild places of The North.
The tour starts at Hexham Abbey, where you can view beautiful architectural work and some incredible craftsmanship from across the centuries. The real gem here is the crypt, which dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period c.674AD.
Passing some spectacular moorland vistas, we will take you to the lovely, remote village of Blanchland. This abbey and village were founded by the white monks, looking for an isolated place of worship. Enjoy a morning coffee break in the White Monk Tearooms or The Lords Crewe Arms, with its atmospheric ‘Crypt Bar’.
At Durham, enjoy a light lunch before heading to the Cathedral. This iconic building is truly magnificent, but it is only ONE part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site! The real reason for World Heritage status, is a truly charming and unique place of worship that lies within the foundations of Durham Castle. This little Norman chapel is a well-kept secret that most tourists miss out on, as they make a beeline for the cathedral instead.
